ACTUALLY THOUGH — EP. 01

Your wedding photographer / videographer will spend more time with you on your wedding day than almost any other vendor. We will be in the room for your first look. We will follow you into the bridal suite. We will crouch in the corner of your ceremony capturing the moment your guests see you for the first time.
And yet most couples spend hours choosing their venue and florals — but only minutes interviewing their photographer / videographer. Here are five questions that actually matter.
We have shot hundreds of weddings and in that time we have learned exactly which questions separate a great booking experience from a nightmare one. Here are the five you should always ask — and why they matter more than you think.
01 — “Do you shoot in our lighting conditions?”
Why it matters
Every venue has its own lighting challenges — dim churches, dark reception halls, harsh midday sun, or golden hour portraits outside. Not every photographer handles all of these equally well. Some thrive outdoors but struggle in low light. Some nail dark moody receptions but blow out bright outdoor ceremonies.
What to do
Ask specifically for examples from a venue similar to yours. Indoor ceremony? Ask to see one. Evening reception? Ask to see one. Don’t assume because their portfolio looks beautiful that it was shot in the same conditions as your wedding. A portfolio curated for Instagram is very different from a full gallery shot in your specific venue.
02 — “What’s your backup plan if you get sick?”
Why it matters
This question makes most couples uncomfortable to ask — but it is one of the most important ones on this list. Photographers / videographersget sick. Emergencies happen. Equipment fails. And your wedding day has absolutely no reschedule button.
What to do
Ask directly — “Do you have a backup photographer / videographer you trust if something happens to you?” A professional will always have an answer ready. If they hesitate, that hesitation is your answer. Also ask: is that backup photographer / videographer covered in your contract? Get it in writing. A verbal promise is not protection.
03 — “How long until we receive our photos?”
Why it matters
Turnaround time in the wedding industry ranges from 2 weeks to 6 months depending on the photographer / videographer. Yes, really. After your wedding you will be desperate to relive every moment. Knowing when your photos and/or video will arrive matters more than most couples realize when they are in the booking stage.
What to do
Ask for the exact turnaround time and make sure it is written into your contract. 6 to 10 weeks is standard for most professionals. Also ask: when do we receive our video? Photo and video timelines are often different. Know both before you sign anything. Unclear answers about timelines are always a red flag.
04 — “Can we see a full gallery — not just a sneak peek?”
Why it matters
Every photographer has 20 incredible frames they show on their website and Instagram. It tells you they can capture a beautiful moment. But a full gallery tells you something different — it tells you how they shoot an entire day. How consistent is their editing? How do they handle the in-between moments? The transition shots? The family formals? The quieter parts of the day?
What to do
Ask to see 2 to 3 complete wedding galleries from ceremony through reception. If a photographer / videographer is reluctant to show you a full gallery or film, that reluctance is an answer. A confident photographer / videographer who is proud of their work will always say yes.
05 — “Do you have liability insurance?”
Why it matters
This is the question almost nobody asks and one of the most important ones on this list. Many venues actually require their vendors to carry liability insurance — and if your photographer / videographer doesn’t have it, they may not be allowed to shoot at your venue at all. Finding this out the week of your wedding is a nightmare scenario.
What to do
Ask directly: “Do you carry liability insurance?” A professional will say yes immediately and offer to provide proof if needed. If they don’t carry it — that tells you everything about how seriously they take their business.
The Bottom Line
A great photographer / videographer will never flinch at any of these questions. In fact, they will be grateful you asked. These five questions don’t just protect you — they filter the professionals who take their work seriously enough to have real answers ready.
